After the comedown of the European Championships what better way to get my head back in the game than attend a store championship. This one was held at Games Hub in the beautiful city of Edinburgh. I played here previously attending a winter kit tournament where I lost out on winning my first tournament by losing to Mark who recently came in the top 16 at Euros flying the same list. So I was back with a vengeance and deciding to retire my beloved Imperials as they are currently not pulling their weight in the tournament scene.
On a side note, we are currently running a competition where you can be in the running to win a brand spanking unopened Special Forces TIE Fighter which is open to residents of the UK and Europe. The competition will be ending on the 22nd June 2017 so make sure you follow this link for more information!
So the Imperials have been given the boot, Iv'e played against various Dash and Miranda lists so I thought I'd give it a go with a variant. This is what I went with:
Round One - Ruben | 100 -74 Win
He was flying: Keyan, Ten and Ethan (BBE)
First round of the day started prompt and I was up against another Rebel list. He set up in the middle of the playing board and I slow rolled towards him with Dash letting Rey hoard focus tokens in the process. We engaged after Miranda SLAMed pooping out a cluster bomb in the process but putting herself at in arc of all of his ships and at range one of some of those. I managed to get a whole damage on Ethan with Dash but by the second round of shooting Miranda was a gonner.....oops. The next round Ethan clipped one of the cluster mines and rolled two damage he then landed on a debris field and rolled a crit! So with Ethan out the picture I had a full health Dash vs two B-Wings, I was chipping away until Keyan was down and I was down to half health. After dancing around a little more I managed to finish off his last Ten Numb in the last round before time was called. Lesson learned, don't fly Miranda into the face of the enemy.
Round Two - Rory | 100 - 49 Win
He was flying: Scum Boba & Kath (Dual Firespray)
Happy with the first win I was next up against a dual firespray list, never faced it before so was curious how it would play out. We set up in opposite corners I played Dash the same and built up a few focus tokens whilst Miranda was out dropping bombs like they're going out of fashion but importantly blocking off areas for control. I focused fire on Boba to get him out the picture as soon as possible, with Miranda landing some TLT and DASH finishing him off. Miranda took a fair beating from concussion missiles and a heavy laser cannon paired with expertise which proved to be quite potent so she limped off dropping a cluster mine behind her. Kath (who looked great in orange!), not wanting to risk the bomb riddled playing field performed a 3 k-turn and started to make her way back up the path she came. We met again near his start position where I 3 banked in with Miranda and SLAMed 3-straight to try getting out his firing arc. It was the absolute closest call (in regards to whether I was in arc) that Iv'e ever seen. Judge was called over and even he found it to close to call so it went to a coin flip. Three damage went through and she had a single health left. I managed a TLT shot the next round but he got her with the rear arc. At this point Dash was still on full health and managed to get in a weird angle in which he couldn't get me in either of his arcs and I Kath went down after a few rounds.
Round Three - Callum (Asteroid Guy) | 57 - 49 Win
He Was Flying: Stridan, Epsilon Leader, Quickdraw
I played Callum at the last tournament at the Game Hub and narrowly beat him. Fun fact: in the previous game we both one shot each others TIE Advanced Prototype with Proton rockets it was hilarious. I've never flown against Quickdraw but know full well of what its capable of. Mistake one- flying Miranda into its face because of a SLAM, I thought I learned my lesson the first time apparently not! His variant of Quickdraw was the self-damage Rage/baffle variant and he made full use of it with a follow up shot with Epsilon Leader taking her down....ouch. She did leave a parting gift which made his next turn particularly harder, Dash also managed to strip Quickdraw of its remaining shields which was a relief. I managed to arc dodge Quickdraw (somehow) and took two hull at which point he decided to hide her for the majority of the game. So I decided my luck with Epison leader but his support from Hux/co-ordinate made him a tough customer so I turned my attention to the shuttle and got him down to half health. Things were getting very heated and as Quickdraw and the shuttle went full circle I managed to cut them off a took out Quickdraw! At this point I was ahead ever so slightly on points and the shuttle unable to turn to get a shot and Epsilon quite far out it was looking good for me. Last round and he managed a range three shot at me and I had a pop at the shuttle. The shuttle survived on one health and I a was on my last shield, it was so tense. If he stripped it I would have been on half points and lost, alas the two dice couldn't cut it and Dash was a happy customer. Note: He easily flew over at least 8 debris field (hence the 'asteroid guy') NOT A SINGLE CRIT LANDED! There's 34% chance of this happening! *obligatory "Never tell me the odds" quote*.
Round Four - David | 100 - 49
He was flying: Headhunter, Misthunter, Shadowcaster
This was only the second time I had faced the Shadowcaster and I knew about this lists janky stress/tractor beam shenanigans and I admit it did take me a little off guard. He started coming down the centre of the playing field and I decided it would be a good idea to SLAM across him with Miranda and placing some cluster mines in the process. I took the full brunt of his whole list and was awarded with no shields, a stress and blinded pilot (I couldn't shoot this round anyway but still!). The next round his headhunter clipped one of the cluster mines and took damage and I Sabined him for another one leaving him with one health the same round I 1-banked away to clear the stress and popped out a conner net which just caught the headhunter and finished him. His shadow caster tractor beamed me and put her in front of an asteroid and the next round she succumbed to it. Dash was again on full health and took the shadow caster out in the next couple of rounds and was left with an almost full health misthunter. Unfortunately he just couldn't get the arc and with one agility he didn't last too much longer.
So four wins and made the cut! Such a difference compared to my questionable Euros performance.
Top Four cut - Jamie | 0 - 100 Loss
He was flying: Poe, Jess (stress) & Blue Squadron Pilot
I was paired up with Jamie (who came 32nd at the Euros, well it was either him or Mark who made top 16), I played him relatively recently at a store tournament in Lanark and he shredded me so my four win glow quickly faded. We set up in opposite corners and he carried out his very well practised manoeuvres and made his way towards me. I tried blocking off one area of the field with bombs but he had no intention of going down there as he had his eyes on Dash, he knew what kind of potential Dash has. And sure enough by the third round of shooting Dash was gone and Miranda was left flailing around without her best bud Dash. Once Jess got some shots off Miranda it became VERY predictable and I tried doing some weird manoeuvres but nothing worked and he made short work of her. Again, he flew that list fantastically and had a very clear plan with how to deal with my list this is why he made top 32 in Europe.
After feeling guilty for betraying my precious Imperials I think it really payed off and with a little more practice with this particular list especially with Miranda I can see myself sticking with them for a little while. I'm absolutely over the moon that I made the cut (first time in a big tournament!) and had a great time doing so 😀
Thanks to Shaz for organising a silky smooth tournament and to everyone that came especially those I played against. We'll meet again one day Jamie and I will have my revenge!! Well done to Mark Allen who ended up winning the Edinburgh store champs!
