First wave XI Preview

So the first wave XI preview has been released by FFG and they've decided to reveal the TIE Aggressor first. When it was first announced it was quite a surprise and somewhat reassuring that they will still be dipping into legends material (still hope for a TIE Avenger, TIE Hunter & Assault Gunboat!). It was even more of surprise to learn that this will be the first Imperial ship with access to a turret. Now if you we're like me you most probably thinking "I wonder what the cheapest pilot will be so I can spam TLTs". Turns out you can get four of these in a list each with lightweight frame, but will this be effective?

Sienar Spammers (100)

Sienar Specialist — TIE Aggressor 17

Twin Laser Turret 6
Lightweight Frame 2
Ship Total: 25

Well on paper yes it doesn't look too bad. It's survivability certainly seems better with an extra agility point and a high likelihood of rolling three agility dice due to lightweight frame. But does this extra ability fair better than 1 agility and two extra shields and an extra hull as seen on Y-Wings? Here's a VERY hypothetical situation: a Y-wing rolling a single un-modified agility dice against an un-modified 3-dice attack would on average be destroyed after 7 rounds of shooting. With the same un-modified situation but rolling 3 agility dice the TIE aggressor is statistically more likely to last another round. But in the current high action economy meta it is very difficult to tell how this will actually play out.

Upgrade Cards

Unguided Rockets | Intensity | TIE Aggressor | Gaming Lark  Synced Turrent Intensity | TIE Aggressor | Gaming Lark  Intensity Intensity | TIE Aggressor | Gaming Lark

The expansion also come with a copy of lightweight frame and twin laser turret and three new cards. Unguided rockets which seems like a TIE Bomber/Punisher buff. Synced Turret which seems quite mehh, deadeye pairs well with it but unfortunately the Onyx Squadron Escort doesn't have an EPT slot so I feel it will only see play depending on how good the dial is to be able to position itself to proc its ability. And finally the one everyone has been talking about: Intensity. For 2 points you can assign a focus token to your ship after you have boosted or boosted. This obviously works quite nice with Lieutenant Kestal- the highest named pilot from this expansion, but the card will most likely see a lot of use on some other pilots, more on that later........

Here's a build Iv'e come up with which again on paper looks very good and I can't wait to try out:

Aggressive Negotiations (100) Aggressive Negotiations | TIE Aggressor | Gaming Lark

Lieutenant Kestal — TIE Aggressor 22
Intensity 2
Twin Laser Turret 6
Ship Total: 30

Major Stridan — Upsilon-class Shuttle 32
Advanced Sensors 3
Inspiring Recruit 1
General Hux 5
Experimental Interface 3
Ship Total: 44

"Duchess" — TIE Striker 23
Veteran Instincts 1
Lightweight Frame 2
Adaptive Ailerons 0
Ship Total: 26

Major Stridan uses Advanced Sensors > Co-ordinate > Lieutenant Kestal Barell Rolls > Free focus/evade > Major Stridan uses Experimental Interface > General Hux (hand out focus tokens like smarties) > Upsilon performs green manoeuvre and clears both stress > Lieutenant Kestal moves and performs an action

aaaaaand breathe.

Aggressor finishes up with either 3x Focus / 2x Focus & Evade / 2x Focus & Target Lock / Focus & Evade & Target Lock

Upsilon finishes up with Focus

Duchess finishes up with either Focus & Evade / Focus & Barrel Roll into better position

This sounds like good fun and potentially quite lethal that is until Stridan is either killed or stressed (most likely the latter in the current competitive scene).

Intensity Intensifies

But Intensity synergies VERY well with other pilots and will likely see tournament use, here's a few examples:

Poe with BB-8 and comm relay- Poe can reveal a green, barrel roll from BB-8 and get a free focus/evade, perform the manoeuvre and get another focus. He can keep the focus from his ability to be able to flip intensity back over. He can also start the engagement with an evade token already banked with comm relay.

Jake  Farrell-He gets a free boost/barrel roll when he performs/is assigned a focus, i'll let you do the math....

x/7 Defender- Vessery or Ryad could also have some fun with this as they could flip flop around with their white/green 4K-turn get the evade, barrel roll and then grab a free focus.

Intensity really shines on ships that have good action economy which are likely to flip it back over on the same turn therefore using it as more of an insurance policy than an easy method of re-positioning and getting focus tokens. Being an Imperial player I would have liked to have seen it Imperial only as this really does boost the T-70 and A-wing but time will tell how much this will have on the meta.

I'll be covering the other wave previews (the Rebel Auzituck Gunship and the Scum Scurrg H-6 Bomber) so make sure you stop by in a few weeks when they're previewed!
