"...a great example of worker (dis)placement which ties in seamlessly with its theme..."
Premise & Theme
Set in the not so distant future, Outlive is a post-apocalyptic worker displacement game. With water growing scarce and the population dwindling underground tribes must strive to become worthy of joining humanities last hope - the Convoy.
The aim of the game is to collect more survival points (SP) than your competitors in order to grant your group access to the Convoy. Over a period of '6 days' you build up your camps resources, build up your bunker, go hunting and encounter random game changing events.
What makes it stand out
Outlive engrosses you in a post apocalyptic world which 'stays in character' from the rules right through to scoring.
Outlive has a contemporary art style with heavy colours and good use of shading which further strengthens its dark grizzly theme. The small resource components are nice and thick making them easier to handle.
It would be nice to visually see how many points players are scoring to devise strategies against them but this would likely add to the end phase turn around time which can sometimes be lengthy. Although there's a diverse range of ways to score points at no point does it feel overwhelming and its easy to devise a strategy on the first playthrough.
Outlive is a great example of worker (dis)placement which ties in seamlessly with its theme giving a refreshing take on a familiar mechanic.
