Two weeks to UK Games Expo

With just two weeks to the European championships what better way to get some practice in than to go to a tournament! I went to the store tournament hosted by Knightly Gaming in Lanark. There was a good turnout of 16 players with a total of four rounds so I could definitely get a feel for the list. He's a battle report and summary of how my games went.

Before this though a few quick notes.

  • If you're competing in the X-Wing tournament you need a ticket for the event AND a ticket for the expo. I overlooked this when I first bought my ticket!
  • The expo is in 10 days!!
  • Just 74 tickets remain :O

Now for the tournament.....

I went in with the following list:

Sloop and Boom

The Inquisitor (25)
Push the Limit (3)
Proton Rockets (3)
Autothrusters (2)
TIE/v1 (1)

"Omega Leader" (21)
Juke (2)
Comm Relay (3)

Omega Squadron Pilot (17)
Snap Shot (2)
Primed Thrusters (1)

Omega Squadron Pilot (17)
Snap Shot (2)
Primed Thrusters (1)

Total: 100

The idea is that the two omega squadron pilots can block and get into weird positions with the sloop and barrel roll and if a ship so happens to land in range one then they get hit by double snapshot. The two aces do their thing and slowly chip away. Iv'e had recent success against a Miranda/Corran list so I had faith in this one!

Round One: Jamie | 29 - 100 Loss

Poe Dameron (PS9) (33)

Push the Limit (3)
BB-8 (2)
Primed Thrusters (1)
Autothrusters (2)
Black One (1)

Jess Pava (25)
R3-A2 (2)
Primed Thrusters (1)
Integrated Astromech (0)

Blue Squadron Novice (24)
M9-G8 (3)
Pattern Analyzer (2)
Integrated Astromech (0)

Total: 99

I’ve seen this guy at previous tournaments never faced him though but I knew he was going to be a tough match up. We set up at opposite corners and spent the first few rounds slow rolling towards each other. He flew it very well which I expected and systematically targeted each of my ships and took them down with relative ease. I felt his list pretty much hard countered mine as he kept shaking off the target locks and once he got the stress on with Jess it was hard to shake off. Maybe i'll get revenge at the Euros as he'll also be there....

Total Snapshot Triggers so far: 1 | Total damage: 0

Round Two: Brett | 97 - 20 Win

Poe Dameron (31)
Lightning Reflexes (1)
BB-8 (2)
Weapons Guidance (2)
Autothrusters (2)

Chewbacca (42)
Expert Handling (2)
Homing Missiles (5)
Gunner (5)
Mercenary Copilot (2)
Hull Upgrade (3)

Total: 97

We set up opposite each other and made our way towards each other. I had my eyes set on Chewie and stripped his shields after the first round of shooting . I anticipated Chewie branching off and turned the same way with one of the squadron pilots. I got the block and he landed short and on top of an asteroid. The next round I hard turned and barrel rolled where I blocked Chewie a second time where he remained on the asteroid. I finished Chewie off with prockets and nipped away at Poe to secure my first win. He gave me an alt art Poe pilot card which was pretty dang awesome!

Total Snapshot Triggers so far: 2 | Total damage: 0

Round Three: Brodie | 100 - 40 Win

Bossk (35)
Adaptability (0)
Boba Fett (1)
Greedo (1)
Dengar (3)
Burnout SLAM (1)

Kavil (24)
Adaptability (0)
Twin Laser Turret (6)
Unhinged Astromech (1)
Vectored Thrusters (2)

Constable Zuvio (19)
Adaptability (0)
Bombardier (1)
Proximity Mines (3)
Primed Thrusters (1)
Scavenger Crane (2)

Total: 100

This was the first time playing a quadjumper so went in a little cautious –more on that later. I flew all four ships in formation and decided to try and target Bossk first. She 3 banked towards me and landed range one in front of both the squadron pilots where she lost two shields. The aces followed up behind them and Bossk was facing all four ships completely tokened up –this will most probably be the first and last time that I destroy a ship in the first round of shooting. The rest of the game I was chasing and slowly nipping away at her remaining ships until the quadjumper remained. COMPLETEY forgetting it could move backwards she popped out a proximity mine out the front, moved back and watched Omega Leader munch on two hits. It was the best play someone had done all day and did make me chuckle. Alas, the Inquisitor was waiting for her as she had to inevitably move forward on the next turn where I finished it off.

Inertial Dampeners (1)
Autothrusters (2)
IG-2000 (0)

Total: 100

Last game of the day and I wasn’t quite too sure how it was going to go Brobots are always a tough match up. IG-88B screamed down the flank (I forgot how fast these things can move!) and IG-88C came at me head on where I took a few shields off. I 4-k turned with the squadron pilots and decided to barrel roll across. This resulted in a gap which he squeezed through, snapshot triggered on both ships but nothing came about it. He then boosted through and blocked the two aces -this cost me dearly, I wish I had never barrel rolled but hindsight and all that. His IG-88B took a chunk out of a naked Inquisitor but he survived. We spent the next few rounds exchanging fire but nothing really going through. I managed to finally kill IG-88C and he took the Inquisitor –I was slightly ahead on points. Last round of shooting and he just managed to kill one of the squadron pilots and beat me by 4 points!

Total Snapshot Triggers so far: 7 | Total damage: 2

So I went 2-2 which I was happy with, I always aim to win as many as I lose any more and that’s a bonus. I walked away with two copies of Alt Art Tactician and Alt art Poe 😀

Things I liked and things I would change
Snapshot just verges on too gimicky in my opinion. I thought this may be the case so I thought running two ships with it on would give it a little boost, I don’t feel like this was the case. It triggered a total of 7 times and I took off two shields the whole tournament. If you could modify dice or rolled three then maybe but I think I’ll leave it for now. Same goes for primed thrusters. There weren’t as many instances where I would really benefit from barrel rolling after a sloop/k-turn but that was likely due to my flying (especially as I was flying the squadron pilots in formation which limited their post-movement options). Prockets on the inquisitor is always a great addition but if someone knows how devastating they can be then they will actively try to avoid them, and because of that I think a hull upgrade on Omega Leader would be more beneficial.
