Premise & Theme

Become a spice merchant travelling middle eastern lands in search of fellow merchants to trade your wares. In this deck-building resource management game the aim is to build up your spices and use them to buy victory points.

Objective

Construct a deck of cards allowing you to convert, upgrade and collect spices. Win the game by acquiring sets of assorted matching spices in order to purchase victory cards.

What makes it stand out

The simplicity of the mechanics, quick set up time and clear rules not only make it a great gateway game to newbies and younger players. It also manages to cater to the experienced gamer wanting a hassle free gaming session.

Component Quality

The beauty of this game is its quick set up time entirely aided by the ergonomic box insert. All components are language independent with the iconography clear and concise.

Final Thoughts

Whilst the simplicity of the game is it's biggest strength it is also its biggest weakness. The theme is entirely portrayed within the card artwork which without you're simply placing wooden cubes onto cards to gain victory points. However additional mechanics would then bloat the game showing it strikes a good balance.

Overall, Century: Spice Road is a fantastic filler game and in our opinion not quite the Splendor killer that some make  it out to be - but that's not a bad thing as that's a great game too! Who thought trading spices could be this fun?
